Road Safety for Kids

11 Jan 2016

It’s never too early to start teaching your kids about road safety and there are plenty of useful resources out there to help you. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that the appropriate approach varies between different age groups and what works for a five-year-old won’t necessarily be best for seven-year-olds.

With that in mind, road safety experts have teamed up with the government to design three age specific key stages of road safety education. These stages are:

  • Under 5 years
  • 5-7 years
  • Over 7 years

Here, we will take you through each stage and show you the tricks and techniques your children can use to stay safe when on and around potentially dangerous roads.

Is Your Car Spying on You?

11 Jan 2016

It’s no secret that companies use and sell customer data. If you have a Sainsbury’s Nectar card or a Tesco Club card, you can earn points and receive money off vouchers, but everything you purchase is logged, and this information can be used to create an accurate profile of each shopper.

It's clear we leave a pretty big data trail wherever we go, however, we rarely take the time to think about the implications of this. Back in 2014, the world was up in arms when it was discovered that the NSA was effectively spying on millions of US citizens without their consent or knowledge. But can we, as UK citizens be sure that we’re not being spied on by our government too?

Is Your Car Insurance at Risk from Dashboard Distractions?

11 Jan 2016

Most drivers in the UK are aware that using a mobile phone while driving is illegal due to the distracting nature of making and receiving calls or text messages. Even taking your eyes off the road for a second or two to see who that message was from can greatly increase the risk of an accident. But, as cars get more and more advanced, the technology added to the dashboard can be just as good at diverting attention away from the road.

Car accidents and near misses caused by driver distractions are on the increase, and ironically, these distractions are often caused by the very things car manufacturers have included to help drivers, such as voice activated satnavs, hands-free integrated mobile phone systems and voice controlled media features.

A Driver’s Experience of Cyclists on the Road

11 Jan 2016

I have been teaching people to drive for over 25 years and there is one main thing that I have noticed a lot while driving behind other cars during a driving lesson; attitude to cyclists on our roads.

Most drivers seem to see them as a threat and unnecessary hazard on the roads. Don't get me wrong, things have changed for the better big time over the years concerning people who cycle. But I think the reason drivers worry about cyclists is because they really don't understand how much space they really need and see them as unpredictable.  As a driver, one should be aware of cyclist needs as it only takes a little accident for it to have big consequences.
