Whether you're a first time buyer or a seasoned home owner there will always be things you need to spend money on around the house. From faulty boilers that need replacing to spare rooms that need a new coat of paint, it can almost seem never ending… and then there's the additional cost of all-important home insurance to factor in. While we can't help you with the decorating we can help you save some money on the insurance.
We've put together a few money saving tips to help you keep the cost of your home insurance down.
- Raising your excess. The higher your excess the lower your payments will be. An excess is an amount that you agree at the start of your policy to pay towards a claim, should this happen. If your excess is £300, that is the amount you pay towards your claim. If you increase the excess amount, meaning you add to the £300, the cost of your premium will come down. If you do decide to increase your excess it's important to make sure you’ll be able to afford it if you do have to make a claim.
- Building up your no claims discount is an easy way to save money on your insurance. Each year that you don't make a claim your no claims discount will increase.
- Increase security. The first thing you can do to increase the security in your house is to install an approved burglar alarm, this could help to reduce your premiums. Improving the locks on your doors will also help, so if you have just moved in changing all the locks is another measure you could take to increase the security of your home.
- Use a timer switch for your lights if you anticipate spending time away from your home as this can deter potential burglars by creating the impression that the property is always occupied. If you are away a lot it may be a good idea to ask a trusted neighbour or relation to check on your property on a regular basis.
